This is a solitary, medium-sized palm endemic to a narrow area of southeastern Argentina, where it occurs primarily on sandy soils in open subtropical grasslands. The palm develops a grayish trunk, with an enlarged base and persistent remnants of old leaf bases. Its crown consists of strongly arching pinnate leaves, with narrow leaflets.; the foliage is pale green above and gray-green beneath with a thin waxy coating. Inflorescences emerge from within the leaves and has small pistillate flowers and a thin papery-woody spathe. The oval shapred fruits are edible; pulp has traditionally been used to make sweets and liqueurs. Long confused with the related Butia yatay, it was formally described as a distinct species in 2012 and named in honor of American palm botanist Larry Noblick, who had earlier recognized that material collected in Corrientes might represent an undescribed species.
