About Butia capitata

This palm has a thick solitary trunk usually covered with persistent leaf bases on the entire trunk. It has long arching gray-green leaves that recurve almost back to the trunk. The leaf petioles are armed with teeth on the margins. The pink-tinged cream flowers emerge from a woody spathe in late spring to early summer and are followed by cherry-sized edible orange-yellow fruits that ripen in mid to late summer.

Cultivation Tips

Plant in well drained soil, but be careful not to let the roots sit in standing water. This species is drought tolerant, so allow the soil to dry out in between waterings. It will thrive in various types of light, from partial shade to full sun. Fertilize monthly during the growing season.
