About Burretiokentia dumasii

This is a solitary palm with a tall, smooth, and slender gray trunk that can exceed 15 meters in height and is marked with widely spaced, leaf scar rings.
It features a prominent, waxy-green crownshaft that contrasts beautifully with the silvery-gray trunk and often has a subtle bluish tint near its base.
The palm's crown holds a graceful spray of evenly spaced, arching, pinnate leaves that are deep green above and subtly silvery beneath; the petioles are short and slightly curved.  Its inflorescences emerge just below the crownshaft and are heavily branched, bearing small creamy-white flowers that open in succession.
The fruit is ellipsoidal, turning from green to reddish-orange when ripe, and is typically borne in tidy clusters along the lower branches of the inflorescence.
This species is extremely rare in cultivation and is mostly seen in high-end botanical gardens or private collections with expert care.

Cultivation Tips

This palm thrives in a protected spot in the garden where it’s shielded from strong winds and can develop its elegant form undisturbed.  Young plants prefer partial shade, but once mature, they can handle full sun in humid tropical or subtropical climates with proper soil moisture.  It prefers rich, loamy soil with excellent drainage and benefits from the addition of organic material to mimic its native forest floor habitat.  Regular watering is essential, especially in dry periods, as this species prefers consistently moist—but never soggy—conditions.  Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer three to four times a year during the growing season to support its steady vertical growth and lush crown.
