This is a small, clustering palm native to the wet tropical forests of Colombia, where it grows as a tight group of slender, spiny stems emerging from a shared base. Each stem supports a modest crown of leaves that may be either feather-shaped or occasionally appear more simply divided, giving the palm a variable but graceful appearance. Like most members of the genus, the stems and leaf bases are armed with sharp black spines, an effective natural defense against herbivores. The flowering structures emerge among the leaves and develop into small, rounded fruits that ripen to bright colors, likely serving as an important food source for rainforest wildlife. This species was only formally described in 2014 after being overlooked for years and mistaken for similar species, highlighting how much palm diversity in tropical forests remains incompletely documented.
