This is a clustering understory palm with multiple slender stems rising from a fibrous base, each covered in short, dark spines that provide natural protection from browsing animals. The trunks are thin and elegant, rarely exceeding 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter, supporting graceful, arching pinnate leaves that create a delicate, fountain-like form. The leaflets are narrow and bright green, evenly arranged along the rachis. Its inflorescences emerge between the leaves, forming short, branched clusters that carry both male and female flowers. Once pollinated, these give rise to small orange fruits that ripen in loose bunches, providing color and food for forest wildlife.  Because of its limited distribution and specialized habitat, it remains rare in cultivation, valued mostly by botanical gardens and palm collectors focused on Central American species.
