About Bactris atlantica

This is a recently described palm species endemic to Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, following field studies and examination of herbarium specimens that clarified its distinction from the closely related Bactris glassmanii in July, 2026. It occurs from the state of Sergipe south through the Atlantic Forest to Espírito Santo, where it is associated particularly with humid forest environments. Like many members of this genus, it it is armed, with pinnate leaves composed of leaflets whose form—particularly the shape of their tips—is one of the features used to distinguish it. The inflorescences emerge among the leaves and branches into numerous slender stems that hold the flowers, with their number helping distinguish this species. The small male and female flowers are arranged along these branches.

Cultivation Tips

This species is best suited to a warm, humid tropical or subtropical garden, particularly in a protected location resembling the understory conditions of its native Atlantic Forest habitat. Based on the requirements of the closely related Bactris glassmanii, it should perform well in partial shade or filtered sunlight when young, with established plants likely tolerating greater sun exposure where humidity and soil moisture remain high. Plant in a fertile, organically rich but well-drained soil, although some tolerance of sandier soils is reasonable given the ecology of its close relative. Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, particularly during warm weather, but avoid persistently waterlogged conditions. A balanced palm fertilizer containing micronutrients can be applied several times during the active growing season to support healthy foliage and steady growth.
