This is a solitary palm with a robust trunk that is often short or partially subterranean when young but may eventually rise above the ground as the palm matures. The trunk can become thick and sturdy, supporting a large crown of massive pinnate leaves that may reach several meters in length. The leaves are arching and composed of numerous stiff leaflets arranged along a strong rachis, giving the crown a full and imposing appearance typical of many Attalea species. Inflorescences emerge among the leaves and bear numerous small flowers that later develop into large clusters of oval fruits. The fruits contain oily seeds that have traditionally been used locally for oil extraction and other practical uses. This species is native to western Mexico and grows in seasonally dry tropical forests and coastal regions, where it can form scattered stands in open landscapes.
