This is a solitary, trunkless (or effectively subterranean-trunked) palm that remains low to the ground, a striking contrast to the towering habit typical of the genus. It does not develop an above-ground trunk, instead producing its leaves from a short, underground stem that helps it withstand fire and drought in its native habitat. The crown consists of stiff, pinnate leaves that radiate outward close to the ground, often forming a dense, circular spread with a rugged, almost shrubby appearance. The foliage is typically gray-green to deep green, with leaflets arranged in a somewhat irregular plane, adding to its wild, untamed look. Its inflorescences emerge at or near ground level, producing small but functional flowers followed by modest-sized fruits compared to its larger relatives. Native to the cerrado regions of Brazil, this species is highly adapted to harsh, seasonally dry environments and remains quite rare in cultivation, especially outside of specialty collections.
