About Attalea crassispatha
This is a solitary, pinnate-leaved palm native only to southwestern Haiti. It develops a tall, robust gray trunk that can reach impressive heights in habitat. Its crown is full and tropical in appearance, carrying numerous long, arching feather leaves with hundreds of narrow leaflets that create a dense canopy. The inflorescence emerges among the leaves and is enclosed by an unusually thick woody spathe—a feature reflected in the species name crassispatha, meaning “thick spathe.” The palm produces rounded to oval reddish fruits containing edible seeds that have been described as richer and denser than coconut and have historically been used locally for oil. It is one of the rarest palms in the world with only 24 specimens found in the wild during a 2017 study.

Cultivation Tips
Plant in a spacious location where it has room to develop into a large specimen over time. Young specimens benefit from protection and consistent moisture, while mature plants prefer abundant sun exposure to achieve strong growth. Use deep, well-draining soil and avoid prolonged wet conditions or standing water. Water regularly during establishment but allow some drying between irrigation events as the root system develops. Feed with a quality palm fertilizer during active growth to support healthy foliage and steady development, keeping in mind that this species is best suited to tropical and warm subtropical climates.
