About Astrocaryum alatum
Native across a wide range in Central America and northern South America, this species is a medium sized solitary palm covered in spines. In habitat, this species is commonly found in lowland rainforests and swamps. It has a short brown trunk, covered with spines and a crown of arching leaves with close, wide leaflets. The pinnate leaves are dark green on top and silvery on the undersides. The petioles are also covered with spines. The oval shaped fruit turns brownish-yellow as it ripens and is edible.

Cultivation Tips
Select a sheltered location that receives full to partial shade when young. As it matures, it can handle more sun. Plant in rich soil with excellent drainage. Water regularly, as this species is accustomed to an environment with standing water on occasion. Feed regularly during the growing season with a high quality palm fertilizer.
