About Arenga westerhoutii
This is a massive, solitary, monocarpic palm with a thick, upright trunk that can reach impressive heights and is typically covered in persistent leaf bases and coarse fibers when young, becoming more columnar with age. The crown is full and arching, composed of very large pinnate leaves with dark green upper surfaces and distinctly silvery-white undersides, creating a dramatic two-tone effect when stirred by wind. The inflorescences emerge from the upper trunk beneath the crown and are pendulous and densely branched, produced sequentially downward along the trunk. The fruits are rounded to slightly elongated and contain irritating calcium oxalate crystals, so handling requires caution.
