This species is a small, clustering palm that grows in lowland forests and regrowth areas, often near streams and damp forest edges. It forms tight clumps of stems about 2–3 meters (6–10 ft) tall, giving it a dense, bushy “understory palm” look rather than a tall, single-trunk silhouette. The leaves are feather-shaped but with fewer, broader leaflets than many palms, creating a bold, textured canopy at eye level. As it matures, it produces small, colorful fruits that ripen from red to purple, adding another layer of interest to an already distinctive clumping palm. In the wild it appears to be localized and uncommon, which helps explain why it’s still rarely seen in cultivation.
