This is a solitary, trunkless or nearly trunkless palm that forms its crown of pinnate leaves right at or just above ground level. Without a visible stem, the fronds seem to rise directly from the soil, creating a dense, fountain-like effect. The leaves are bright green with gracefully arching leaflets arranged in a feather-like pattern, giving it a soft, layered appearance. Small, cream-colored inflorescences emerge near the base of the plant, producing clusters of oval, red to orange fruits when mature. Native to the understory of Southeast Asian forests, its compact form and lush crown make it a highly desirable palm for collectors. Its name, subacaulis, refers to its “almost stemless” habit.
