This is a solitary, trunkless to short-trunked palm, typically forming a low, graceful crown emerging directly from the ground or atop a very short subterranean stem. The crown is composed of arching, pinnate leaves with stiff, narrow leaflets that are evenly arranged and often slightly recurved, giving the palm a refined yet rugged appearance. Its inflorescences emerge from among the leaf bases and are notable for the distinctive pale to whitish calyx, a key feature referenced in the species name. The palm produces ovoid to ellipsoid fruits that ripen to yellow or orange, each containing a single seed and contributing to its ecological value in native habitats. Select an open, sunny garden location that mimic its native savanna and grassland environments.
