About Wallichia disticha

This solitary species has a thin and smooth trunk. The tree has large, feather-like leaves that can be up to 6 feet long, which are arranged in two rows on the trunk. The leaves are green and glossy, and the tree produces small clusters of yellow or orange flowers that are followed by small, black fruits.  This species is monocarpic, meaning that it flowers once and then dies.  This species is also relatively short lived, only 15-20 years.

Cultivation Tips

This species is relatively simple to grow. Plant in a location that receives full sun, although it can take partial shade in a hotter climate. It will thrive in moist sandy soil, but can tolerate clay and loam soils which can also be slightly alkaline or acidic. Water regularly, and ensure soil is well drained, do not let the roots sit in standing water. Feed regularly during the growing season with a high quality palm fertilizer.
