About Saribus rotundifolius

Livistona rotundifolia was reclassified as Saribus rotundifolius in 2011 after DNA research.  In habitat, this species is quite common in swamps, rainforest and mangrove margins and alongside rivers. This tall palm has a solitary stem marked with leaf scars. Its crown is topped with large, round, and fan-shaped leaves, up to 4 feet in diameter. Leaves are arranged in a circular pattern at the top of the trunk, creating a distinctive fountain-like appearance. The leaves are green in color and have a glossy, waxy texture. Due to its appearance and rapid growth rate, this species is common in cultivation all over the world, but especially in tropical and subtropical countries. Its flowers are borne on a long-stalked inflorescence. The fruit turns from red to black as it ripens.

Cultivation Tips

This species prefers bright, indirect light or partial shade. As it matures, it can handle full sun. It will thrive in a warm and humid tropical environment. Plant in well-draining soil; it will also tolerate sandy or loamy soils. Water regularly and allow the top layer of soil to dry out before watering again. During winter months, reduce watering somewhat. Apply a balanced, slow-release palm fertilizer once every three months during the growing season.
