About Sabinaria magnifica

This is a solitary palm with a slender, ringed trunk that can reach around 10–15 meters tall, giving it an elegant stature. The crown is striking, consisting of huge, deeply divided, circular palmate leaves that can span up to 3 meters across, with a silvery underside that glimmers in the light. Its inflorescence emerges between the leaves and bears clusters of small flowers that are followed by round, green fruits that mature to a darker shade. This palm is exceptionally rare in cultivation, discovered only in 2013 in the Darién Gap region between Colombia and Panama, and is the sole species in its genus — making it a true treasure among palm enthusiasts.

Cultivation Tips

Select a sheltered garden location with room for its giant leaves to spread. Young palms benefit from partial shade, while mature specimens can handle full sun in humid, tropical conditions. It thrives in well-draining, organic-rich soil with consistent moisture but no waterlogging. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells, to mimic its rainforest habitat. A balanced palm fertilizer applied a few times per year will help sustain healthy growth and leaf color.
