About Sabal palmetto

A large robust fan with a solitary trunk and curved, costapalmate, fan-shaped leaves, This species thrives in a variety of settings including beaches, forests and swamps. In their natural range they are considered weedy as they readily propagate throughout the landscape, usually assisted by birds. The trunk of the tree is thick and fibrous, and the tree produces small, white flowers and black berries. It is often used in landscaping and is also the state tree of both South Carolina and Florida.

Cultivation Tips

Plant in well irrigated soil. This species is drought resistant and can survive a dry season. Requires full sun. Fairly simple to maintain and grow. Avoid over pruning. Feed occasionally with a high quality palm fertilizer.
