About Sabal mexicana
The species is a solitary palm with a stout, gray trunk with closely spaced rings. The crown is topped 10-25 fan-shaped leaves ranging in color from deep emerald green for palms in shade or part shade, to lighter green for palms receiving more sunlight. The petioles are smooth and without thorns. The trunk doesn't begin to appear until the tree is at least 10 years old. A notable characteristic with this species is that it can flower when young, often blooming before a trunk forms. Small white flowers in a branched inflorescence emerge, with male and female flowers on the same plant. The fruit is round to oval shape and turns dark purple to black when ripe.
Cultivation Tips
Select a location that receives partial shade to full sun. While it is widely adaptable to a wide variety of soil types, it will thrive if planted in well-drained soil. It should be planted in the summer when the soil is warm. It is difficult to transplant after it's a foot tall because of its large root system. This species is prefers a humid atmosphere. It is drought resistant once established, but grows faster and looks better when given adequate moisture, and can even tolerate occasional flooding. Feed occasionally during the growing season with a high quality palm fertilizer.
