About Sabal maritima

This is a solitary fan palm that develops a stout, upright trunk, often partially subterranean when young and becoming more visible with age. It does not form a crownshaft, with leaves emerging directly from the trunk in a robust, rounded crown. The foliage consists of large, costapalmate leaves with stiff, deeply divided segments that are blue-green to gray-green in color, giving the palm a rugged coastal appearance. Inflorescences are long, arching to drooping, extending well beyond the crown and bearing numerous small, creamy-white flowers. The fruits are small, globose, and black when mature, each containing a single seed.

Cultivation Tips

This species performs best in open, sunny locations and is well suited to coastal and subtropical landscapes. Young plants tolerate some light shade, but mature palms thrive in full sun, where their leaf color and form are most pronounced. Plant in well-drained sandy or loamy soils, though it adapts well to poorer soils once established. Water regularly during establishment, then reduce to moderate watering, as this palm exhibits good drought tolerance over time. Apply a balanced palm fertilizer two to three times per year to support steady growth and healthy foliage.
