About Sabal blackburniana
This is an undocumented species, thought to be a hybrid of Sabal domingensis with another hardy Sabal species. Its true origins are unknown. It is a medium sized palm that grows at a faster rate than Sabal palmetto. Due to its cold hardiness and growth rate, this hybrid is becoming more popular in cultivation.
Cultivation Tips
Select a location that receives partial shade to full sun. While it is widely adaptable to a wide variety of soil types, it will thrive if planted in well-drained soil. It should be planted in the summer when the soil is warm. It is difficult to transplant after it's a foot tall because of its large root system. This species is prefers a humid atmosphere. It is drought resistant once established, but grows faster and looks better when given adequate moisture, and can even tolerate occasional flooding. Feed occasionally during the growing season with a high quality palm fertilizer.
