About Roystonea regia
Tall attractive solitary palm. The trunk is massive, bulging slightly towards the middle, concrete-grey with closely-spaced rings. Its crownshaft is glossy green, smooth and up to 2m in length, topped by crown of pinnate fronds. Fronds are simple, plumose and have a rather tangled appearance. Dead leaves are self-pruning and fall off plant as single whole fronds. It is quite common in cultivation and has been planted throughout the tropics and subtropics as an ornamental tree.
Cultivation Tips
While moderately drought tolerant, they do best with regular watering and will grow well in damp, swampy areas. When young they can manage with partial shade, but once they reach maturity, they really need full sun, and plenty of room to accommodate their large stature. They tolerate a wide range of soils. It prefers acidic to slightly alkaline soil, but be careful not to have too much alkalinity or the fronds may come out frizzled. To prevent nutritional deficiency, apply fertilizer that has continuous release formula twice a year during growing season.
