About Ptychosperma elegans

This is a solitary palm with a slim light gray or almost white trunk that has dark leaf base scars. On top of the trunk sits a two foot tall olive-green crownshaft that has a bulging base and smooth waxy surface. The crown is topped with pinnately compound fronds that are dark green on the topside and gray-green on the underside. The inflorescences are green-yellow and appear just below the crownshaft. The oval shaped fruit is bright red when ripe.

Cultivation Tips

Plant in a location that receives full sun or partial shade. Juveniles will benefit from a more shaded position. This species needs lots of water, so consistently moist soil is required, and its important not to let the soil dry out in between waterings. This species thrives in rich, humus laden soil that is well drained. Feed regularly during the growing season with a high quality palm fertilizer.
