About Pseudophoenix vinifera

This species is thought to mainly occur naturally in habitat in two primary populations in the Dominican Republic. Other populations may be found throughout Hispaniola. It is a solitary palm with a distinguishable wine bottle shaped gray trunk, with prominent leaf scars when young. The trunk is topped with a pale green crownshaft and a crown with two dozen long, dark green, arching leaves. The inflorescence long and pendulous and grows from within the leaves. The fruit is bright red when ripe. Due to its unique appearance, it is a prized species for tropical gardens.

Cultivation Tips

Select a location that receives full sun to partial shade. Provide more shelter when young. Plant in rich soil that drains well. This species is somewhat drought tolerant, so take precautions not to overwater. Feed occasionally during the growing season with a high quality palm fertilizer.
