In habitat, this species grows in plains and scrublands. It is a tall species with a unique looking trunk. Young trunks bear triangular shaped leaf scars that become more diamond-shaped with age. It's long pinnate leaves form a dense crown and feature hundreds of blueish-green leaflets in a criss cross pattern. The petioles are armed with spines. Yellow inflorescences are heavily branched, bear small white blossoms, and grow among the leaves. The fruits occur in orange clusters, turning dark red to purple when mature. While the fruit is edible, it is not particularly tasty.
