About Phoenicophorium borsigianum

In habitat, this species can be found in the undergrowth of moist forests at low and medium altitudes. It has been spotted growing in both deep shade and in more open outcrop sites. This is a solitary palm species with a slender trunk ringed with leaf scars. Long, orange leaf stalks extend from the trunk and have sharp, black spines. The crown has full emerald green leaves, have prominent veins and are split at the ends with orange-edged serrations. New leaves emerge a deep maroon color and their texture is crinkled. The inflorescence emerges below the crown. Small, oval fruits turn orange in color as they become ripe.

Cultivation Tips

Select a sheltered location that receives partial shade to full sun. Even though the species grows in the rainforest canopy, it can handle full sun even when young. The entires leaves should be protected from wind. It will thrive if planted in soil that drains well. Given that it is somewhat drought tolerant, take precautions not to overwater.
