About Licuala peltata var. sumawongii
This species is an understory palm native to humid valleys and ravines. It is notable for its striking appearance, entire leaves that are pleated and quite leathery to the touch. It is a moderately sized palm with a short trunk. It is topped with a crown with up to 15 large, flat, undivided leaves. The branched inflorescence emerges parallel to the trunk and extends beyond the crown. The round fruit turns from olive green to orangish-red as it ripens.
Cultivation Tips
Select a sheltered position protected from winds, which can damage the large undivided leaves. When young, the species will thrive in partial to full shade. As it matures, this species can handle quite a lot of sun. Plant in rich soil that drains well. Water frequently to ensure the soil does not dry out in between waterings. This species is much more tolerant of cool conditions than nearly any other species in the genus. Feed occasionally during the growing season with a high quality palm fertilizer.
