About Latania lontaroides
This species is a large striking fan palm that is well-known for its stunning reddish color. The petioles and leaves have a very distinctive red coloration when young. As they grow bigger, their leaves lose their color and turn green, but the leaf-stems and the margins always stay red. The leaf surface is whitish and waxy. The mature trunk is gray, smooth and slightly swollen at the base. It measures up to 25 cm in diameter and exhibits rings which are the scars of fallen leaves. The edges of the leaf and the main leaf veins are finely toothed. Quite popular in cultivation, this species is classified as endangered by the International Union For Conservation of Nature.
Cultivation Tips
Plant in a location that receives partial shade to full sun. Water regularly, as it grows best in moist well-drained soil. To prevent nutritional deficiency, apply good quality palm fertilizer that has continuous release formula twice a year during the growing season.
