About Latania loddigesii
This is a solitary fan palm with a stout trunk that becomes slightly swollen at the base and marked with closely spaced leaf scars as it matures. Its crown carries a dramatic array of large costapalmate leaves, often up to 8 ft (2.5 m) across, with thick, rigid segments and a distinctive silvery-blue or blue-green waxy coating that gives the palm its striking color. The leaves are covered with dense, wooly tomentum on the underside. The petiole is smooth and armed with sharp teeth near its base. The inflorescences emerge among the leaves and the species is dioecious, meaning male and female flowers occur on separate plants. Female palms produce clusters of oval fruits that mature from greenish tones to brown, containing a single seed.
Cultivation Tips
Select a bright, open location where it can develop its symmetrical crown and show off its striking blue foliage. Young palms tolerate partial sun, but mature specimens perform best in full sun. It prefers well-drained sandy or rocky soils and adapts well to coastal conditions. Once established, the palm is moderately drought tolerant, though it benefits from occasional deep watering in dry periods. Apply a balanced palm fertilizer two to three times per year to maintain strong leaf color and steady growth.
