About Hyophorbe verschaffeltii

This is a very distinctive solitary palm, known for its elegant, smooth gray trunk that swells at the midsection, creating the signature “spindle” shape that inspires its common name. The crown carries 8–10 gracefully arching pinnate leaves, each with stiff, evenly spaced leaflets that are deep green and slightly glossy. Inflorescences develop just below the leaves, bearing small cream-colored flowers that attract pollinators such as bees. The fruits are oval and turn from green to orange-red when ripe, creating a bright ornamental display. Due to it's unique appearance, it is very popular in cultivation, but due to habitat loss, is considered critically endangered in the wild with less than sixty plants found in the wild.

Cultivation Tips

It prefers a sunny, open location for optimal growth, though young plants benefit from partial shade until established. It thrives in well-draining sandy or loamy soils and will not tolerate prolonged waterlogging. Water regularly during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings, and reduce frequency during cooler months. This palm is moderately drought tolerant once mature but appreciates consistent moisture in hot weather. Fertilize three times a year with a balanced, slow-release palm formula, ensuring micronutrients such as magnesium and manganese are included to prevent leaf yellowing.
