About Gaussia princeps
This species is a solitary palm with a pale, significantly swollen, barrel shaped trunk. As it matures, the trunk gradually tapers, topped with a long green crownshaft. The crown has up to 6 plumose leaves arranged almost symmetrically. The inflorescence is highly branched and when in bloom, the flowers are arranged in small short clumps. The small round fruit turns orange-red when fully ripe. Despite its distinctive appearance and ease of care, this species remains somewhat rare in cultivation.
Cultivation Tips
Select a location that receives partial shade to full sun, even when young. As it matures, it can handle full sun. This species prefers well drained soil, with a preference for limestone but is resilient and can grow well in a variety of soil types. It will thrive in a tropical climate, but tolerates warm temperate regions that seldom encounter a freeze. It is drought tolerant as well, so take precautions not to over water. Feed occasionally during the growing season with a high quality palm fertilizer.
