About Euterpe edulis
This species is an attractive medium sized solitary palm with a slender light gray trunk. It features a large crownshaft than often turns an orangish-bronze color. Its crown has large drooping pinnate leaves. Inflorescence emerges from the base of the fronds and has cream colored flowers. The edible fruit forms on drooping clusters and turns black when ripe. In the past, it was commercially harvested for its edible palm heart. In recent years, this practice has diminished due to declining wild populations.
Cultivation Tips
Plant in a location with filtered sunlight when young, but can take full sun as it matures. This species requires a humid, tropical climate. It prefers moist soil that is well drained. This species is often harvested for hearts of palm production. In cultivation this palm needs rich soil and plenty of water and fertilizer during the growing season.
