About Copernicia macroglossa

This is a large, solitary, truly unique specimen palm with a thick trunk and a large crown of fan-like leaves. Younger plants are covered in dried leaves, forming a dense petticoat, where the palm appears stemless. The dried leaves slowly fall off as the palm matures, revealing a smooth slender stem. The leaves are circular in shape, and have a distinctive glossy appearance. The tree produces large, yellow-orange fruit that are inedible. It is often used as an ornamental plant in tropical landscaping, and its leaves are also used to make various products, such as baskets and roofing material.

Cultivation Tips

Plant in a location that receives full sun. It will thrive in hot and humid conditions. It will tolerate poor soils, however it does best in moist soils with good drainage. The species responds well to fertilization. Trim the leaves as they fade if you don't care for the petticoat. This gives the palm a less massive and more graceful look.
