About Coccothrinax fragrans
This species is a medium sized solitary palm with a slender trunk. When young, the trunk is typically covered with the remnants of old leaf bases. As it matures, these fall off to reveal a clean, gray trunk. The crown is topped with fan shaped leaves that are light green on top and grayish on the undersides. When in bloom, the inflorescence produces small, fragrant yellow flowers, hence its common name.
Cultivation Tips
Select a location that receives full sun to partial shade, even when young. As it matures, it requires full sun. Plant in rich soil with excellent drainage. Water occasionally, as this species is somewhat drought tolerant. It will thrive in a warm, tropical climate and does not tolerate frost well. Feed occasionally during the growing season with a high quality palm fertilizer.
