About Chamaerops humilis var. argentea
Synonymous with Chamaerops humilis var. cerifera. This species is a clustering palm found in habitat at up to 5,000 feet in elevation in the Atlas mountains. It has multiple trunks, covered with a thick layer of tan fibers. It has intense silver blue color on the upper and lower surface of the leaves. From spring to summer, it produces short, rigid panicles of small creamy colored flowers typically hidden from view behind the leaf stems. The small, round fruit are yellow-orange and turn to brown as they ripen.
Cultivation Tips
Plant in a location that receives partial shade to full sun. This species is widely adaptable, growing in a wide range of conditions and tolerating both cold and heat temperature extremes. Plant in soil that drains well. It is very drought tolerant, so take precaution not to over water. Feed occasionally during the growing season with a high quality palm fertilizer.
