About Caryota obtusa

Formerly Caryota gigas. In habitat, this species can be found spanning wide ranges across the foothills of the Himalayas. This is a solitary palm that is the largest species of its genus. It has a thick trunk and a crown topped with massive segmented, bipinnate (fish-tail) leaves that are green above and light green underneath. The inflorescence emerges from among the leaves and can grow quite long. The flowers grow on hanging spikes that sprout in a clump. The round fruit turns purple when fully ripe. This species is monocarpic meaning it flowers once, then dies.

Cultivation Tips

Select a location that receives full sun or partial shade. This species is tolerant of a wide range of soil types, but it prefers a slightly acidic soil. It requires regular watering to thrive, especially during hot and dry periods. However, it is also drought-tolerant and can survive with minimal irrigation once it is established. It is likely the most cold hardy species of the genus. Feed several times during the growing season with a high quality fertilizer.
