About Caryota mitis

This species grows as an emergent palm in tropical rain forests. It is a clustering species, with many trunks. Each slender stem is topped with several light green bipinnate leaflets which are shaped like a fish's tail fin, hence its common name. Each species in this genus is “monocarpic”, which means that it flowers and fruits only once, and then dies. The remaining clumps will survive and continue to produce more stems. Avoid contact with the red fruit produced by this palm. It contains oxalic acid which is toxic when ingested, and contact with skin may result in severe chemical burns.

Cultivation Tips

Bright, indirect light but no direct sun. Keep the soil barely moist and never allow it to totally dry out. Fertilize spring, summer, and fall when plant actively growing. Warm temperatures and high humidity help the plant look better and grow faster. Feed regularly during the growing season with a high quality palm fertilizer.
