About Butia odorata
This species is a solitary palm with a thick grayish trunk. Its crown has greyish blue-green fronds which arch gracefully. When in bloom, separate male and female flowers are grouped in threes, pale yellow to red, on many strands connected to a central stalk. Fruit is edible, sweet, tart, and juicy. Some people describe the flavor as somewhat reminiscent of pineapple. This species is becoming more common in cultivation.
Cultivation Tips
It is a hardy and adaptable tree that is well-suited for cultivation in a variety of climates. Plant in a location that receives full sun or partial shade. It will thrive in a location that gets at least six hours of direct sun per day. This species prefers well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter.
