About Borassus aethiopum
This species is widely distributed across sub-Saharan Africa. In habitat, it can be found in savannas and forests. It is a massive, solitary species with a trunk up to 1 meter in diameter at the base. It's crown contains large green leaves up to 3-4 meters wide on petioles armed with spines. The flowers produce yellow to brown fruit resembling a coconut.
Cultivation Tips
This species is endemic to hot, tropical climates with low to medium rainfall. Plant in a location that receives full sun to partial shade. Although it is slow growing as a juvenile, it will grow to a massive size, so allow adequate room for growth. It will thrive in rich, well drained soil. Established palms become somewhat drought tolerant. Feed occasionally during the growing season with a high quality palm fertilizer.
