About Arenga pinnata

This species is noted as one the the world's most economically important palms for products of human consumption.  The sap from the inflorescence is used to make a type of sugar.  In habitat, this species is found naturally growing along river banks from low to middle elevations. It is a medium-sized palm, with the trunk covered by the rough old leaf bases, black fibers and long spines. It's crown is topped with 20 to 25 leaves, which are very dark green on top, with a silvery bottom, The leaf sheaths have fibrous black hairs that cover the stem. Inflorescences arise singly first from the top. Fruit turn yellow when ripe.  It is a monocarpic species, meaning that it flowers once and then dies.

Cultivation Tips

Choose a location that receives partial to full shade. In a full sun location, this palm's fronds tend to turn lime-green or yellow, so the extra fertilization helps prevent this discoloration. These palms like a regular watering though take precaution to avoid letting the roots stand in water for extended periods of time. Apply palm fertilizer at least three times a year, in spring, summer and fall...and if the palm is planted in full sun, fertilize more often.
