About Arenga engleri
This species naturally grows in a cluster form with the new growth emerging from the soil line close to the plant. It has dark green leaves with slender, clean, distinctly ringed trunks. The stems are covered with black fibers. The flower stalks look like spikes and grow from among the leaves. It produces both male and female flowers and can reproduce on its own. The flowers are very colorful and are fragrant. The inedible fruit is round and turns red to deep purple as it ripens. The species is considered monocarpic, meaning the flowering trunk will die, but the other surrounding trunks will continue to flourish. Due to its modest size, appearance and cold tolerance, this species is very popular in cultivation.
Cultivation Tips
Plant in a location that receives partial sun to semi-shade lighting in a sheltered garden. It thrives in moist soil with good drainage and has a low salt tolerance. Water regularly as this species is not drought tolerant. This species is considered monocarpic, meaning the flowering trunk will die, but the other surrounding trunks will continue to flourish. It has sensitive roots, so may not be ideal for replanting. Apply palm fertilizer at least three times a year in spring, summer and fall.
