About Areca vestiaria - maroon
This species is a rare solitary, sometimes clumping palm, notable for its deep red to maroon crownshaft. The light gray stems are slender, smooth, prominently ringed with old leaf scars, often with stilt roots at the base. Its crown is topped with thick, broad, glossy, pinnate, dark green fronds. New leaves emerge red to maroon and often hold their color for weeks before fading to a dark, faintly mottled green. The inflorescence is cream, and clustered on short flower stalks. The small, oval fruit turns to orange or red when ripe. Due to its vibrant colors, this species is highly prized in cultivation in tropical climates.
Cultivation Tips
It is a shade-loving palm that requires frequent moisture, indirect sunlight and high humidity. It prefers moist soils that are well-draining though it can tolerate most soil types. They prefer a sheltered, consistently moist and humid location, with more shade in less humid environments. Feed several times during the growing season with a high quality palm fertilizer.
