About Areca catechu
A handsome single-stemmed, tropical palm with broad, glossy green, feather-shaped leaves that protrude from a green crownshaft and has a narrow, upright habit. The single slender green trunk ages to grey with prominent white leaf scars. The branched inflorescence emerges from within the leaves and has many creamed colored fragrant flowers. The fruit turns yellowish red when fully ripe. This species is prized in cultivation in tropical climates.
Cultivation Tips
This species prefers locations where the sunlight is abundant, a minimum of 4-5 hours of complete exposure is essential. It can grow in a variety of soil types, but thrives best in moist, well drained, loamy soil. Avoid planting in heavy clay as it lacks sufficient drainage. Provide regular watering to grow properly as it can’t withstand long periods of drought. Feed regularly during the growing season with a high quality palm fertilizer.
